It’s time for your mammogram
How to be prepared
It’s time to schedule your mammogram. If you’ve never had one, you may be a bit scared. This x-ray of the breast tissue is a great health check as it is used to detect breast cancer. What do you need to know to help the appointment go smoothly?
Avoid deodorant that day
Yes, you are nervous for the appointment, but avoid antiperspirants, deodorants, or other fragranced products that day. The metallic particles in these products as well as powder, lotions, creams, or perfumes can cause confusion and issues with your results.
Timing matters
A study has shown that getting a mammogram during the first half of the menstrual cycle yields more accurate results. This is because the breast tissue tends to be less dense during this time. For your own comfort, you should also consider when your breasts are the least sensitive during your cycle.
Pain medication can be taken
If you find mammograms painful, discuss with your doctor’s office if it is okay for you to take acetaminophen (Tylenol) prior to your appointment. This might help ease the pain during your appointment.
What to wear
It is most ideal to wear a two piece outfit to your appointment. That way you can just take off your bra and top. You will be able to cover yourself with a robe. It’s also ideal to not wear any necklaces that day since you will also be required to take these pieces off.
Avoid caffeine if possible
Many people need their cup of coffee in the morning and cannot possibly give it up. That said, it is wise to reduce your caffeine intake 3-4 days prior to your mammogram. Caffeine can dilate blood vessels which can lead to breast tenderness.
What to bring
If you have a doctor’s order for a mammogram, bring it with you. You should also be sure to have your ID and insurance card on you. Healthstar Physicians is offering 3D mammograms for $99 during October for self-pay patients. This is a special promotion during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
